LA DOLCE VITA” AT THE INTERNATIONAL ROME FILM FESTIVAL

MARTIN SCORSESE TO PRESENT WORLD RESTORATION PREMIERE OF ”

October 25th, 2010, MILAN – Gucci and The Film Foundation are pleased to announce that Martin Scorsese will attend the 5th International Rome Film Festival on October 30, 2010 in order to present the world restoration premiere of Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960). The premiere of the 4K digital restoration celebrates the 50th anniversary of this Italian cinema classic.  To date, Gucci has supported the restoration of six iconic films and donated a total of $1.5 million to The Film Foundation as part of its ongoing commitment to preserving the artistic and cultural heritage of landmark cinema.

Shot in Rome over five unforgettable months in 1959, the La Dolce Vita shoot itself became a media event long before the film was completed. The set was visited by virtually all of Rome and consequently Italian cinemas were flooded upon the film’s release the following year.  Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini said, “La Dolce Vita is a film that paved the way for a new world with an obsession for style, fashion and celebrity.  It was a period of profound transformation that also helped to export an Italian style that subsequently contributed to the country’s own cultural trademark around the world.  This was a golden period in Gucci’s own history, when the House first emerged on the world stage partly due to the visibility it received from its international jet set clientele.  It was therefore only natural for Gucci to honor this legacy. Through preservation, the vision of legendary filmmakers like Federico Fellini can continue to inspire us, as well as future generations.”

The film’s radiance as captured by Fellini has been restored from the original camera negative by Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata in association with The Film Foundation, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia-Cineteca Nazionale, Pathé, Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, Mediaset and Medusa film, Paramount Pictures and Cinecittà Luce.

Martin Scorsese commented, “Fellini brought something new to Italian cinema. And with La Dolce Vita, he conquered the universe.  It’s difficult to convey exactly how special the look of this picture was at the time, and thanks to the support of Gucci we’ve been able to restore this film from the original widescreen negative and bring it back to its original splendor.”

Following the premiere, Frida Giannini will host an exclusive dinner in celebration of the 50th anniversary of La Dolce Vita with expected guests including Martin Scorsese, Dante Ferretti, James Franco, Guillaume Canet, Charlotte Casiraghi and Eva Mendes.
