Mavis Staples
Etichetta : ANTI
anno : 2010
genere: Gospel
voto: 7/ 10
At a time when the biggest CD releases all seem to be of the same typical genres, it is refreshing to have the 70 year old Mavis Staples combating this with an album which can only be described as being a mix of rock, country and soul all enclosed within a gospel album. There was already a buzz around Staples back in 2007 when she released the album “We’ll never turn back”, in which she used and reworked songs from the time of the battle for civil rights. Now, three years later, she has released “You’re not alone”, a 13 tracks album produced by the label ANTI. Compared to the previous album, this one deals with different themes and revolves more around the classical/sacred topic. Besides, the guitarist Jeff Tweedy, leader of the group Wilco, participated with this CD, and his presence is felt not only in the covers but also in two songs, “You Are Not Alone” and “Only the Lord Knows”, written by himself. The sounds have many influences, ranging from country music to rock, and they’re defined by the inclusion of guitars and distortions. The alternation of dynamic and relaxing songs gives a feeling of pure and permits the album to be exclusive in its genre. However, let us not forget the fact that the leading instrument of every single song is Staples’ amazing voice which is the perfect frame of this important issue.
